Statement to the Catholic Community of the Northern Beaches, Diocese of Broken Bay

I write to you today following the news that Liberal MP for Pittwater, Rory Amon, whom I know will be known to many of you, has been charged with child sex offences.

The charges relate to an alleged sexual assault of a teenage boy in 2017 in Mona Vale.

Mr Amon has been granted strict conditional bail and will appear in Manly Local Court on 18 September.

With National Child Protection Week taking place from this Sunday, 1 September through to 7 September, it is appropriate the Diocese of Broken Bay reaffirms our steadfast commitment to the Safeguarding of all in our community, particularly children and the vulnerable.

We reject any acts of abuse and promote the inherent dignity of all people and will continue to work closely with other communities across the Northern Beaches and throughout the Diocese to build a safer, more caring environment for all.

I would encourage anyone who is aware of any abuse to immediately contact the police. Additionally, support is available through Safeguarding Broken Bay for those in need of assistance at (02) 8379 1605 or safeguarding@bbcatholic.org.au.

Together, let us continue to foster a community where every person is valued and protected.
