St Joseph's community shave for a cure to honour teacher

27 May 2021

On Friday 14 May, in honour of Mrs Julia Pourbozorgi and the families in their College community dealing with the impacts of cancer, 17 staff and students from St Joseph's Catholic College, East Gosford participated in the World’s Greatest Shave.

The college raised over $33 000, and this amount was reached by shaving, cutting or waxing their hair. There was strong community spirit amongst the students and staff, which was empowered by the collective support of the parents and siblings of the brave shavers.

"It was empowering to participate in an initiative that embodied so many of our school values, including giving hope and building community, both within the school and with those suffering from blood cancer," said Sophie. "It was a great feeling to be able to give those individuals solidarity and hope, with the huge support of the school cheering us on."

"From the start I knew that I had to take part in this," said Year 10 student Gabrielle. "I shared so many tears of joy and happiness knowing that I helped out so many families facing the struggles of blood cancer. I hope that my experience inspires others to take part in the coming years. I am proud to now say that I participated in the World's Greatest Shave 2021, an unforgettable experience that I will cherish for the rest of my life."

"To me, participating in the World’s Greatest Shave means providing a little more comfort for those in a particularly vulnerable state," said Year 12 student Jess. "Raising as much money as we did makes me proud, seeing our community come together to not only support us and our new beginnings but the journey of thousands in Australia alone."

Three generous hairdressers from the parent community donated their time and skills on the day to shave the students' heads..

"For me, helping out for World’s Greatest Shave at Joey’s was totally inspiring," said Libby, a parent and haidresser. "Having shaved my own head for the cause seven years ago I understand the courage it takes, but to do it at such a young age is amazing! Each of the volunteers just sparkled after their shaves; the atmosphere was electric, I was on such a high after leaving the school."

Principal Tony McCudden volunteered to have his head shaved and his legs waxed for the great cause.

Stephen from the College Maintenance team also got involved and shaved his head. "I have known a couple of friends that have passed from Leukemia and I did the World’s Greatest Shave about 20 years ago."When I saw how passionate the Joeys girls were to participate I decided it was time again to do my bit for such an important cause. I was very happy to see the whole school get behind everyone that participated and the cheering on as they were shaved. Congrats to the Joeys girls and staff that participated. Great effort and result!"
