Former member of parliament Keith Pitt has been appointed as Australia’s Ambassador to the Holy See, replacing Chiara Porro, who has served in the role since September 2020.

Pitt previously served as a member of the cabinet in the Morrison government as Minister for Resources and Water, before quitting parliament earlier this year.

Australian Catholic Bishops Conference President, Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB congratulated Pitt on the appointment.

“The prestigious role is a testament to Mr Pitt’s distinguished service and dedication to our nation,” he said.

“Transitioning from his role in Federal Parliament to this significant diplomatic position underscores the trust and confidence placed in him to represent Australia’s interests on the global stage.

“His experience and insights will undoubtedly serve him well as he navigates the complexities of international diplomacy.

“The appointment of a former parliamentarian to this esteemed position follows a notable precedent.”

Pitt was born in Bundaberg, Queensland and took up an electrical apprenticeship after school. He then studied engineering at the Queensland University of Technology.

He worked as an electrical fitter mechanic and later an electrical engineer, before establishing the Australian Safety and Training Alliance, a workplace health and safety training provider.

In 2013, he was elected to parliament as a member of the National Party. He served until 2025, when he announced he would quit parliament.

Australia has had an Ambassador to the Holy See since 1973, however the Ambassador has only permanently resided in Vatican City since 2008.

“We assure Mr Pitt of our support and prayers as he seeks to be a bridge of goodwill between the Australian government and the Holy See,” said Archbishop Costelloe.

“We also extend our sincere thanks to outgoing ambassador Chiara Porro for her dedicated service over four years and wish her and her family well for all that lies ahead.”
