Lights of Christmas at St Mary’s Cathedral 2021

As the year is ending, the annual Lights of Christmas event is back at St Mary’s Cathedral. Over the period 9-25 December 2021, St Mary’s Cathedral will be lit with spectacular Christmas art from 8:30pm every night. (Choirs begin at 7:30pm and the light show runs from 8:30pm to 11pm.)

For over a decade, St Mary’s Cathedral has hosted a spectacular light show in St Mary’s Cathedral Square - an event attracting hundreds of thousands of families, children, community groups and visitors.

The Lights of Christmas displays the true meaning of Christmas – the good news of the coming of Christ – along with beautiful images of the Madonna and Child.

Celebrating the season of peace, joy and love, the Lights of Christmas this year has the theme of Home, at a time when many have been working or studying from home for a number of months in lockdown. The display aims to remind us of the importance of home in our lives, a place where life unfolds, our sanctuary and our safety net. Each 15-minute light show is inspired by the colours of the stained-glass windows in St Mary’s Cathedral and will be accompanied by the voices of various performers including the Cathedral Choir.

The annual light show is the work of AGB Events. AGB Events will work closely with NSW Health in implementing coronavirus safety guidelines for the outdoor event. All attendees are required to electronically register upon entry.

Attendance at Lights of Christmas is free of charge. Attendees are asked to enter the event from William Street, and will be asked to register their details via a QR code check-in for contact tracing purposes.
