Those who have answered God’s call to religious life

The “Vocare” series by Shalom World looks at the lives of those who have answered God’s call to religious life, examining the difficulties they face, the joy of their ministry, and the spirituality that sustains them. Our own Fr Sam French is one of those featured.

Though becoming a priest was not an initial dream, Fr French felt a clear and compelling call to serve. He has had success using digital media to spread the message of God. His success in this area began when he was assigned as a chaplain for World Youth Day, and from there, his digital presence grew, inspiring many with his message of faith and love.

As the youngest priest in the Diocese of Broken Bay, there are few who understand what it takes for a young man to accept the call and make the decision to enter the priesthood in the 21st century more than Fr French. When he joined the seminary in 2016, he was the first Broken Bay local to enter in more than a decade. He was ordained to the priesthood in 2021, and now serves as the Broken Bay Director of Vocations.

Fr French grew up in the Woy Woy Parish with his six siblings and their parents. He is now with the Broken Bay Diocese and moves around Broken Bay promoting vocations and helping to encourage and build relationships with those considering their vocation. His top priority is visiting parishes on the weekends to celebrate Mass, promote priestly vocations, and be available to help with questions people may have about the priesthood and life as a priest.

If you are a young man or woman who hears the call of God in your heart in a particular way, do not be afraid to listen to that call. Always feel free to contact Fr French directly or via the Broken Bay Vocations office.
