International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
In August 2022, the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference issued its 2022 – 2023 Social Justice Statement, Respect: Confronting Violence and Abuse. The Statement concentrated on the issue of violence against women and children. The Office for Justice, Ecology and Peace will hold an online event on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on Friday, 25 November 2022.
Keynote speakers will include Bishop Vincent Long, Chair of the Bishops Commission for Social Justice, Mission and Service, and Michael Jeh, Ambassador for Small Steps 4 Hannah, an organisation set up by the family of Hannah Clarke after her partner murdered her and their three children in Brisbane in 2020.
The day also marks the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence. Many organisations in Australia and around the world have organised campaigns for this initiative which started 30 years ago. Christine Carolan from Australian Catholic Religious against Trafficking in Humans (ACRATH) and Shatha Jajo from Jesuit Refugee Services will share information at the event about their plans for this initiative.
