Change to the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation
Adjustments have been made to the age of children receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation in the Diocese of Broken Bay.
The coronavirus pandemic has disrupted the course of our Sacramental Preparation Programme. Given the circumstances, the Sacrament of Confirmation will now not be available at all in Broken Bay during the 2020 year.
Previously, children receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation were at least seven years old, typically those in Year 2 or greater. For the future celebration of the Sacrament, candidates will be at least eight years old, those who are in Year 3 or greater. As a consequence, Reconciliation and Eucharist will therefore be celebrated by those who are at least aged nine and in Year 4 or greater.
Apart from issues related to the coronavirus, the change positions sacramental preparation for children who will now be older and thus more able to appreciate the significance of their Christian Initiation.
Broken Bay parishes will complete current sacramental preparations commenced in 2019, and in the new year, will resume the programme for candidates under the new arrangements.
Bishop Anthony Randazzo acknowledges that we have been through significant disruption affecting parish communities in numerous ways. Many creative and innovative initiatives have been required and adopted by the people of Broken Bay to keep our faith flourishing.
