Catholic Social Profiles 2016

National Centre for Pastoral Research

The National Centre for Pastoral Research analyses census data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and produces national, diocesan and parish level reports on the Catholic population. The 2016 National Catholic Census project has derived data for each Diocese and Parish from the 2016 Australian Census. These reports are now available to you from the links below.

The reports include profiles of almost 1,300 Catholic parishes across Australia offering insights that can be used for pastoral planning processes.

The reports don’t address the question of religious practice, simply a respondent’s choice on the Census question of religious affiliation.

The data does tell us is that while the Catholic population fell between the 2011 and 2016 Censuses, the people captured in these reports still identified as Catholic and are people whose faith is important to them, whether we see them each Sunday or not.

The reports provide statistics on a range of demographic measures, including age, sex and country of birth, presenting the changing nature of Catholic parishes.

The National Centre for Pastoral Research is an agency of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference. The Centre was established in 1996 in Clayton, Victoria, on the premises of Corpus Christi College, the seminary for the dioceses of Victoria and Tasmania. In January 2018, it moved to Canberra and is now located in Braddon ACT.
