In 2021 we celebrate 500 years of Christianity in the Philippines.

Christianity was brought to the Philippines in 1521 when the Portuguese explorer, Ferdinand Magellan, landed there on the island of Cebu. He was leading a Spanish expedition in a bid to reach the East Indies, sailing west. The Philippine archipelago, which was named after King Philip II of Spain, became a colony of Spain and remained so until 1898.

With about 81 percent of its estimated population of some 100 million identifying themselves as Catholics, the Philippines is home to Asia's largest Catholic population.

Since 2012, the Catholic Church in the Philippines has been in a 9-year preparation for the 500 years of the arrival of the Gospel in the country, with each year assigned a specific theme and aspect of the Church and Christian life.

"Gifted to Give", taken from Matthew's Gospel (10:8), is the theme for the 2021 celebrations.

The 2021 observance is a reminder of how Filipinos have embraced the Catholic faith.

Our Lady of Dolours Parish Chatswood will celebrate the 5th centenary of Christian faith in the Philippines with a special Mass on Tuesday evening, 16 March 2021. The celebration will include the Apostolic Nuncio to Australia, Archbishop Adolfo Yllana and Bishop Anthony Randazzo.
